Why are we programmed to be such jerks to ourselves? Our brain knows how to give us ~unlimited reward. Why aren’t we programmed to be kind to ourselves with extra reward when things go well. Why is it helpful to use the stick so much when we have infinite carrot?

In all seriousness, it's some function of the right hemisphere/the bicameral division/the well-attested nonlinguistic processing of the brain, or all three mixed. We dunno and we don't got a model, despite what brain nerds say, b/c they don't get what a "model" is
