i went out for a walk tonight and started sprinting on a whim and it felt really good, but part of what i did was change the way i was using my feet so i struck the ground heel-first and relaxed some tension i usually hold in my feet

google says striking the ground heel-first is bad sprinting form but... holding my feet the other way felt worse idk :/ anyone have strong opinions about proper sprinting form around here?

I always switch off when toes first start to hurt but i like the bounce bounce bounce of it
heels first hurts after a while too

Started jogging some time ago & was naturally doing heel-first. Couldn't continue after a few weeks due to serious pain in the ankles that only occurred while running :/

do what feels natural to you, top runners do both with no difference in injury rates

Running barefoot on grass will guide you towards biomechanically correct running form. Waffle sole shoes have inculcated generations of runners in the western world to heel strike, with catastrophic effects. Check out “Born to Run”, a popular book from about 10 years ago 1/2

What shoes are you wearing? Thick-soled shoes with arch support and raised heels will make you run heel-first.
Running barefoot or in barefoot-mimicking shoes.. literally impossible to run heel-first without being in pain immediately.

It's bad... But it's a consequence of both our footwear and built environment that it is what feels comfortable for you.

you want mid-foot strike. heel first, force goes to the knees. toes first, your calves take in too much force. you want the forces to go all the way to your butt.
