I read mostly books with plucky 12-year-old heroines who discover they have magic powers that are nonstandard in their world.

This also sounds like the kind of thing I'd read, once I finally get sick of horse books... any recommendations?

Diane Wynn Jones' Dalemark Quartet. Four books written over two decades. The last volume is magnificent. Pretty good all the way through, although 1 and 2 are a bit generic and 3 is very strange.

Garth Nix, Sabriel/Lirael/Abhorsen. Characters are a little older, but teenage girls are probably still the ideal readers.
