just messed around on a keyboard a bit and i can't unhear it now. major thirds in equal temperament sound off 🤢 can't believe i've been playing "nervous, agitated" thirds on a piano my entire life
Conversation
the upshot is that equal temperament makes fifths sound very good (2 cents off from just) which might explain why i like 9th chords so much (three fifths)
gonna fuck around with just omitting thirds from chords for awhile now

You might like to try 31 tone equal temperament, which has somewhat more active fifths (~5 cents flat), but rather pure thirds (less than a cent sharp). It's still meantone temperament, so going up two fifths and down two fourths lands you on a third.

Or 53 equal is also pretty nice, it has a third which is less than two cents flat, and a fifth that is less than a tenth of a cent flat -- but the downside is that the best third is not four steps up along the circle of fifths, but rather 8 steps down.
