just messed around on a keyboard a bit and i can't unhear it now. major thirds in equal temperament sound off 🤢 can't believe i've been playing "nervous, agitated" thirds on a piano my entire life

the upshot is that equal temperament makes fifths sound very good (2 cents off from just) which might explain why i like 9th chords so much (three fifths)
gonna fuck around with just omitting thirds from chords for awhile now

One thing you may appreciate especially now is that barbershop style singing is done in just temperament, very pure harmony. youtu.be/Qo_N9_ZFBhs

I dable in pedal steel guitar, it's common to lower the 3rds about 15 cents...my korg tuner even shows a mark for lowered 3rds

time to get into alternative tunings. maybe some microtonality? maybe some strange connection to the riemann zeta function? en.xen.wiki
i guess it's an interesting q what tuning a guitar ends up in... each string has a fixed frequency ratio among other notes on the same string but you can mess around with the ratios b/w strings. if you tune to EADGBE... a fourth, a fourth, a fourth, a third, a fourth... hmm

If you hear purer fifths, it will make a piano's fifths sound "off" after. As a bowed string player, we can adjust our tuning of fingered (non-open string) notes, and get purer fifths. So a string quartet accompanying a small choir will naturally use the less tempered tuning.
