getting fucked up thinking about how a perfect tuning system is impossible for like... math reasons
don’t like this defect built into the fundamental nature of reality
not a fan of equal temperament as a compromise driven by atonal music either 🤔

hard to tell how much of this is priming but really sounds to me like there’s a big difference between the meantone and equal temperament recordings here. damn

i wonder if an electronic instrument could automatically do imperceptible frequency shifts to keep things sounding in perfect tune indefinitely

.. or produce different pitch based on some subtle physical manipulation of the key, like moving it sideways / hitting it from the left/right rather than centre.

There is a huge difference, especially on that final chord in the samples.
To me, meantone has "higher highs" (thirds, fifths) and "lower lows" (other intervals are more dissonant than equal temperament)
Really comes through when you resolve to a major chord in the home key!

Harpsichord sound has a lot of harmonic content so it really highlights the different tunings. Piano is much more forgiving.

I feel so betrayed right now, seriously this caught me off guard
I could have been listening to Chopin and Beethoven the way they were meant to be heard and no one told me
