okay so this thing. this nerds vs. jocks thing. where does it come from? i picked it up from TV and movies and shit. who was patient zero? were a bunch of filmmakers bullied a lot in high school? did their bullies have dads who were WWII or vietnam vets or something?

my grandpas, both WWII vets, were each on other sides of this dynamic, so it's at least that old. nerd grandpa was clearly traumatized from it. maybe having both in the family let me feel okay with the identity "smart guy who lifts weights" starting at age 15?

hmm, reflecting more: maybe it was "I am a punk who does drugs" was more why I didn't have to pick a side, so I was free to do whatever seemed cool? taking AP tests for fun couldn't make me a nerd because I had pink hair, etc
