my dad grew up poor in china and my mom... didn’t i think? they’re both programmers so we were comfortably upper-middle-class growing up

in my experience, it is alien to the coastal american mind the lengths to which immigrants will go to hide their poverty from their kids.

I think poverty is relative. Even while you’re in it, unless you have comparisons around you, you keep your nose to the grindstone and keep working. Today’s world seems harder because of the availability of people whom to compare oneself to 🤷🏻♂️
