frustrated that i don’t have a really smooth and easy workflow for generating diagrams and graphs and shit. it would be nice to be able to effortlessly post animations of standing waves and stuff as easily as i can effortlessly post text

Similar pain point: I'd love to be able to quickly make block diagrams and back-of-envelope mechanical sketches for communicating visual ideas that text isn't suited for.
I often revert to sketching on paper & taking a phone photo, which is bad - fast creation but zero editing.

i used an ipad app called paper to draw a bunch of diagrams for a few grad classes i took. people loved them but it was never as effortless to get them out of the app and into a pdf as i wanted

Yeah, it seems like the two main focus points in this problem space are:
1) Art/drawing apps - super nice to use once you're in, but slow to boot and import/export
2) Quick note apps - Good export and nice to quickly jump into and add text, but sketching is nonexistant or minimal

My platonic ideal here would be something super quick to jump into and export from, that internally can:
1) Do freehand sketching
2) Do basic diagrams/shape/text layouts
3) Import a photo (to sketch on or label)
and integrates with many other apps to easily export your images
