there's very high pressures on female employees (and *especially* academics and startup founders) to not have kids - VCs and tenure committees are known for believing that having kids is seen as a detraction from a career

I wonder how much of the social environment is either career or economic pressure (“wait until you finish grad school, have a high paying career, and savings!”)

Friends and social environment are different here. I think my friends would support me, but the general abstract culture would not (e.g. Women are valued based on career performance/feminism and for my hypothetical wife to have kids would be a status blow for her).
