when i was growing up in the '00s the culture war battle lines felt like 🟦 dem = atheism, sexual freedom, gay marriage, drugs 🟥 rep = christian (the bad kind), sex for reproduction only, gays bad, drugs bad so "marriage and kids" was conservative, hence uncool

It wasn't economic hopelessness, and it wasn't millennials per se - it was a specific social class of them. I went to a rural, public high school and lots of my classmates, the ones who would be dismissed as "normies" ended up with houses and kids.

This is one reason I generally avoid millenial griping - I see my life as, for better or worse, the product of my own decisions. Yes, I did receive toxic narratives from my parents, teachers and ambient culture - but I could have rejected them.

something did happen but I think it's gonna be a few more years before we have the full picture of it. Historic changes have been afoot for a while now, but the full shape isn't yet clear.
