I CANT REMEMBER WHERE I HEARD THIS BUT I THINK IT WAS A FILM ANALYSIS YOUTUBE VIDEO. Anyway, they talk about how old stories/films used to use the heart as the source of life. Stab someone in the heart and they are destroyed. Society understood this collectively.

At some point when medical science advanced far enough, we learned about consciousness, or that people could survive almost any injury except brain injuries or w.e. The brain was more vital to life, so now decapitation became the new definitive destruction of personness
