Pretty sure the primary, lasting side effect of graduate school (for many) is to collapse all your rich, varied emotional states onto a single low-anxiety/high-anxiety axis.
As far as I can tell, this takes *years* to undo.

Oh yes, I think we are both in the quitting grad school club! Like a moron, I started over in a completely different field. But the identity crisis of quitting the first one basically lasted ~6 years, and arguably never really went away?

Yeah, I get it :( At the time, my dad said he was disappointed in me for quitting, and I was only very recently able to turn that shame into the anger it should have been in the first place...
