rereading The Magicians and hyperfocusing this time on any scene involving anyone’s parents
Conversation
i said just today that i’ve never really identified with any fictional character but quentin coldwater comes very uncomfortably close

the first time i read The Magicians the fact that every character hates their parents was an unremarkable background fact i completely ignored but this time i think it holds the key to understanding all their motivations

i was sold on quentin when, in the first chapter, he thinks of his myriad academic achievements and then looking at his best friend, thinks that he never felt like the main character in his story, only a sidekick in his friend's
VERY uncomfortably close

read it first in school, reread it in college. it's bad that i identify with the vibe of the book (ennui, malaise) more as time goes on.
