learning that hawaii has its own words for lava:
ʻaʻā — rough lava w/ a rubbly surface of broken lava blocks called clinkers
pahoehoe — ropey lava that looks like a sticky river when flowing
Conversation
the word used for both is ‘Pele’—the hawaiian deity of volcanoes, lava & fire
“The lava flows basically reaffirm what our literature tells us—that the land is alive, that Pele is alive. When we talk about the lava being alive, it’s a metaphor for the earth itself being alive.”

Pele is indeed alive. I think this lava river would technically be extra-liquidy, high-speed ‘pahoehoe’ (from an eruption in 2018) twitter.com/buitengebieden
