finding myself drawn to horror stories after taking a years-long break from the genre
would love recommendations for horror stories that:
1. have protagonists who are compelling and don't hold the idiot ball toooo much (I'll overlook a bit of that for an otherwise good story)
Conversation
2. aren't slasher/gore; probably also want to avoid excess body horror as well (particularly pregnancy-oriented body horror. Do Not Want)
3. aren't stephen king (I've read too much of his stuff)

looking mostly for stories/books; here's a list horror that I've really enjoyed in the past:
1. Haunting of Hill House (netflix series)
2. The Northern Caves by nostalgabraist (sp?)
3. Oculus (clever protagonists -- mostly)
4. SCP, particularly the Antimemetics Division
