apple cider vinegar + dish soap (fruity or neutral smell) + granulated sugar. mix and leave out. works nicely, no heavy chemicals, just empty it out when it fills with fly corpses.

try keeping fabric softener sheets around you to keep them away, seems to work mainly anecdotally!
my fam usually hangs a bag filled with apple cider vinegar & water off of a tree branch to keep mosquitos away while bbq! smell of vinegar is as effective as deet

also you can make a mosquito trap with yeast, sugar, dish soap & water. place the mix in a jar with a funnel on top so they can travel in easily but are stuck within the container for long enough to stay stuck

do you know if sourdough starter works in place of yeast?

yeah I'd assume so actually! co2 is what attracts mosquitos to us so the sugar + yeast is to replicate that, sourdough starter should work in a similar way!
