something that got clarified in a DM conversation just now: the vast majority of the harm i think school does to children is completely invisible. it's lost creativity and energy that should be there but isn't. you have to have a sense of what's possible to feel its absence

the little of parenting culture that i've seen in the US is so much about protecting children from big legible dramatic dangers like being physically abused and so little about protecting them from being hollow shells, hungry ghosts, the living dead

.@danlistensto's thread from a couple weeks ago on this subject is very relevant. you have to know that it's possible for people to not be this fucked up to mourn how fucked up they are. that, to me, is one of the big takeaways from transformative work

coming from a homeschooling background, i find it very hard to explain this to people
like explaining water to a fish

the women i know who were homeschooled seem so much more themselves compared to other women
the effect seem less strong for men, in particular i think the (probable) lack of social opportunities effects men more :/

also, you know that thing where all the studies seem to show that "nurture" barely matters?
i think that's simply because they aren't controlling for the fact that all the kids are going to public schools, which are all very similar in their dysfunction (even the "good" ones)

for sure. i also wonder if good parenting isn’t just so rare it’s statistically undetectable tbh

Damn, there should be a word for that:
hyperperspectivation, “a sense of what’s possibly by feeling it’s absence”

The imagination deficit is the most staggering thing in the human realm - but few people know it... because most people lack imagination!!!

To me, school today is like medicine before people learned about germ theory and hand-washing. Creative souls die every day and most people shrug the way they must’ve when women and children used to die in childbirth. Leaves from the vine...
