check this shit out. this book about witches was written 48 years after the invention of the printing press by some guy who was really mad at and apparently sexually obsessed with some chick and then everyone started using it to prosecute witches. absolutely wack backstory

(i only know gilles de rais exists because i watched fate/zero, obviously, and i looked him up today to better understand the plot of fate/grand order, of course, naturally)

if I recall correctly the salem (and surrounding area) witch trials kicked off pretty much solely because one particular priest thought poorly of a few women for things like not attending church, remarrying an unpopular fellow, being south american, having seizures, etc.
