not quite sure if this is a thing it will help people to hear, but: there is no such thing as "sad for no reason"
the implicit folk psychology is that you only feel sad if something bad happens, but lemme tell ya: you also feel sad if you are *reminded* of something bad

the way likes to talk about it is that emotions are associational - you hear a song and it reminds you of your first kiss because that song was playing and you feel wistful and nostalgic and sad because that relationship ended pretty poorly all things considered

the different steps in that associational chain can happen more or less consciously; if they happen almost entirely unconsciously then you experience being sad but not understanding why, or maybe the sadness itself isn't fully conscious and you just feel heavy in your chest
