for me there was a kind of egoic clinging to my first identity (mathematician) and i had to experience ~ego death to be able to let it go enough to do something else. this was terrifying and it took years and i didn't do it very cleanly. "fixed mindset" doesn't quite capture it

I experienced a similar thing with tying too much of my identity to my craft (music), which made it difficult to collaborate with others, accept criticism, etc. Funny enough, having an ego death experience also was what set me on the path to having a more holistic identity.
