So, Harvard, Yale, & Princeton are doing virtual education this fall? Good. They should do virtual education every fall. Massively expanding undergraduate class size would be one of the fastest ways for elite schools to live up to their reputation as engines of opportunity.

MIT opencourseware has had video lectures, problem sets, etc. available from MIT classes, for free, for years now, and that fact hasn’t lowered the perceived value of attending MIT one iota ocw.mit.edu/index.htm

I cannot learn stuff like algebraic geometry from opencourseware, it's just basic stuff I can learn anywhere. I think not even Lagrangian mechanics is covered.

A lot of stuff I learned at Cambridge is secret knowledge not in any books and I doubt you’d find it in online lectures, either.

yup. 3rd/4th year theoretical physics stuff in particular. not necessarily knowledge in the sense of “truths” but ways of looking at things, techniques etc. that are incredibly helpful

Yeah, that's the advantage of quality professors. I found that this kind of stuff one can alternately get by reading between the lines of high-level papers.
