there is a good and relevant partial objects post about comics that makes a similar point. people are looking at harry potter with a critical weight it was never intended to bear. before she wrote those books jk rowling was just some woman, y'know? web.archive.org/web/2012051102

bwahaha bro when I was in middle school I somehow got my hands on the Eisenhorn Trilogy, which can effectively be summed up as "you will never know whether or not you are doing the right thing because the universe is so vast & cruel. morality, though, demands you keep trying"

reread HDM recently and ... wow ... the grief at the end, it's like a ton of bricks. maybe as you grow older the only powerful emotions are strong memories of old emotions but jeez, i was nonfunctional for a day
