there is a good and relevant partial objects post about comics that makes a similar point. people are looking at harry potter with a critical weight it was never intended to bear. before she wrote those books jk rowling was just some woman, y'know? web.archive.org/web/2012051102

they’re very short books individually so this is super doable, don’t miss out on the chronicles either although the megamorphs and alternamorphs are more forgettable

i used to get them from the library; i hit one where a big tragic death happens. It was the first real tragedy I'd read in a book, and I had an absolute sobbing breakdown. I was 10 years old; my mom found me and forbid me from reading any more animorphs again :(
