here’s my proposal, it’s pretty simple: college admissions can still happen, just... without college attached to it
incoming freshmen take all the money that was going to be spent on tuition and pool it to buy mansions together and study whatever they want

they can feel free to decide to only mansion it up with other peeps accepted to the same college or not it’s up to them
i had this idea 5 or so years ago but it’s looking a lot closer to the overton window these days
