The fastest growing religious identity in the US is "none" and we have our first atheist president. Atheism went mainstream around the time the internet got bored of it.

I didn't need the internet to become atheist as a teenager, neither did most of my friends. Internet atheism was never about deconverting people. It was to let atheists find each other online and form their own subcultures: Atheism+, Rationality, furries probably idk, etc.

1) It was always about avoiding deluding oneself and living according to rationality, never blind convenience. 2) It never "fell off" –atheism is now acceptable enough that we focus on single issues like profiteering churches, tax exemption. Vocal fringe ➡️ everpresent movement
