The rationalists with the most slack, the ones with money, health, friends, and freedom, are often the most risk averse. It's maddening. Express yourself, do drugs, ask someone out, quit your job, pick a fight in the park, pick a fight with the NY Times. You'll be better for it.

it's been a long-standing sense I've had of this community that people are waaaay more risk averse than i think is ... virtuous? i don't usually think in virtuous terms but that seems to be the best frame for this. like there's no discussion about tradeoffs or life vitality

Some did and some didn't. I'm on my third country, just as an example. And those that are ahead of the curve at 25 for being risk-averse are going to stay right where they are for the next 60 years and die bored if they keep at it.

Quit my stable Director job at a national corp last year to join a friend's tiny biz, and moving from AZ to NY in a month to a house I'm buying without visiting first. Not all of us that buy into the rationality bit are super risk-averse, just a lot of the central/public figures.
