Narcissism and self-absorbedness are very different things. Opening this thread and taking the replies well is proof of non-narcissism. Self-absorbedness isn't especially bad as long as working on yourself is genuinely what you need to be doing right now but oh, uh, well

Heh. What I meant was "not starting an argument half the time" which is what I'd be doing. I can't imagine not throwing energy at refuting unfounded criticism.

Narcissism is pathological criticism-aversion, that is, it is the fleeing from the identification of opportunities to improve. This definition seems to track with the medical diagnosis and I'm finding it's hard to make sense of people without naming this concept.
