temporarily locking until i've thought more about how to respond to this. i am probably not in any real danger, i don't have a job anyone could try to get me fired from, and i'm not exactly particularly involved in the SSC comments or subreddit or anything, but... still :/

Why is everyone freaking out? What sort of stuff are people expecting to get cancelled for? I've not read SSC so I have no idea of the fuss.

This is what has thrown me off. I donβt quite get what would make people loosely in the ecosystem dangerously cancellable

I followed his work ten years ago, when he frequently covered Wikipedia drama for the Register. He was good at poking fun at self-important drama, but did not seem mean-spirited about it. I do find this marginally reassuring.

I don't think it's going to be a hit piece, Scott will be fine! But I have subscribed to his Patreon just in case. Least I could do quite frankly

You may well be right. We'll have to see what happens.

I welcome any attempts by people to "cancel" people over SSC stuff. So far, I haven't had much sympathy for canceled folks. All the drug war prisoners kinda blew out my "lives ruined over nothing" sensor. But the excuses for canceling SSC will be hilarious and relatable to me.

I'll finally have a reason to join in the fight against the cancellations. I'll finally have relevant arguments to posit vs. the cancellors. It won't just be an opaque unsympathetic "them" I'd be fighting to protect. I might even come out with my real name as an SSC supporter.

It's the NYT that is doing the article (I don't know if it will turn out to be a hit piece).
