One question this raises is: what are the true/best hole-fillers (or else hole-descriptors)? Your using "sin" and "virtue" seems to suggest these are the right names.

i think it's a matter of skillful means. sin and virtue have a long history and are deeply embedded in the fabric of western civilization. moving to them from more confused concepts may be helpful. but there are confusions embedded in them still, i think

The way I’ve thought of this is with the term “mimetic niche.” If there is a “god meme”, it occupies some cognitive niche - it explains and predicts certain signals, while producing others. Each “x shaped hole” would be its own niche.

yes, the ecosystem metaphor is also very apt and maybe even more so! positions memes and clusters of memes as more active agents rather than just commodities to be consumed by a market
