somehow i feel like growing up in the 90s i was sort of ambiently promised by american culture at large that everything would be basically fine. does that resonate with anyone else?

Wow. Yes, actually Upon thinking about it a little bit I feel like this might be the biggest difference between growing up now vs then, because I feel like every zoomer I see on the internet is like "we're all fucked, can't wait to die" etc

yeah that's definitely when it shifted in american culture at large. i think i personally was barely affected by 9/11 on an emotional level tho (grew up in washington). for me i think the moment i stopped believing things would be basically fine was AlphaGo vs. Lee Sedol

honestly i'm finding it's kinda more fun to feel like civilization is falling apart, there's a sense of freedom associated to it for me

Oh totally. The cracks were there (name an optimistic sci-fi movie after 1980), but the main narrative was “it just seems to work out.” Welcome to the weirding, right @vgr?

The 90s resembled closely a denouement for most proponents of American culture.

The supposed great enemy (the Soviet sphere) had just collapsed, and with it the main known x-risk (nuclear winter). Real GDP growth >3%. Relatively stable cultural & political institutions. Information superhighway coming to homes—seemed strictly good then. Discount airlines...
