Anyone else reading The Secret Commonwealth? Pullman's been reading The Master and his Emissary (there's a quote from him on the front of my copy) and it's not subtle. Really enjoying it so far.

A German philosopher has killed God. Lyra's estranged from her daemon and in full-blown nihilist despair. The government's on a legibility kick. There's a new postmodern way to read the alethiometer.

I've been thinking about the alethiometer for a while now as a good symbol of something like the preformal - formal - postformal transition. But looks like Pullman's just straight out going there, I don't even have to make it up myself.

wild. His Dark Materials was a deeply meaningful read for me as a kid (much more so than Harry Potter) but i haven't checked out the new stuff yet, sounds like a fun time

Yeah me too, you should definitely read the new ones! I wasn't that excited when La Belle Sauvage came out and it took me ages to get round to reading it, then was surprised how much I liked it. New one is better again.
