Forgiveness is a weird concept when you think about it. Actions have consequences; you can’t magically erase them. How can forgiveness mean something other than pretending a falsehood is true?

forgiveness is not (primarily) epistemic; it can mean e.g. declaring an intent not to socially punish someone any more than you already have. on a more emotional level it can mean letting go of resentment or blame

actions have consequences but people tell all sorts of stories about what those consequences mean and there’s a lot of room for retelling the stories

Forgive but don’t necessarily forget. I think these concepts gets intertwined. You don’t have to forget. Let me ask, do you forgive yourself? Do you forgive your child? Your partner? Your friends? Now, strangers...? Is there no chance for redemption. Would you not want this?
