people who don't have a concept of satan as the great deceiver are genuinely missing out on a memetic defense against dangers that aren't what they seem, e.g. charismatic sociopaths

"rationality" can be disabled as a defense by a sufficiently intelligent adversary, and i'm speaking from personal experience here; it's not a substitute for sense-making and meaning-making which has both pre-rational (e.g. emotional / perceptual) and meta-rational components
