Nah man, in fact there's a *common* source for me: flourishing lives full of beauty and love *are* what is worth fighting for - we should not adopt the view that each human is just a drain on resources!

You're right that I'm mixing a "generative" energy with a "scale-aware" energy. To oversimplify, I think empowering 1000 sculptors is more Good than being a single sculptor, but it's only good *at all* *because* being a sculptor *is good*

But of course there's a 2x2 here in what energy to attach to the message: It's Good for humans to (shrink as much as possible and reduce our footprint / create, express, and experience) You should (focus on your individual contribution / multiply your impact as much as you can)

*sigh* I really feel you on this right now. I watched the film Anthropocene yesterday, and spent the afternoon in a slump. Sure, I *know* that love and art are good, but once you're working deep in a supply chain, how *then* can we know what's good? Argh!

The film is mostly just a stream of imagery from industrial processes (VERY worth looking at: https://www.edwardburtynsky.com/projects/photographs/anthropocene …) Some of what they show is obviously culturally coded as "bad" (this coal mine; several towns including beautiful churches have been demolished to make way)...pic.twitter.com/9gNqBfHSKR

Others much less clear. Sculpture is specifically featured: this mine extracts marble at a much higher rate than before, it "looks" "extractive" but is it maybe good? Here's an eerie set of evap ponds for lithium... for electric vehicle batteries... IDK man! Maybe it's good!pic.twitter.com/LO5KSOEBVD

This photo *looks* bad, for sure. It's *definitely* bad that these people don't have better opportunities than to pick over this trash for bottles every day. But would it be bad for the trash to be in a pile if it just sat there? No, right? This is hard and exhausting.pic.twitter.com/zlKr3XxUFe

I really get stuck when it comes to nature imagery. Every bone in my body "knows" that what's depicted is Good. Intellectually, I "know" that I feel this way *because* my ancestors who felt this way ended up choosing spots with good clean water and lots to forage and hunt.pic.twitter.com/Y0EdhybuGp

Sometimes we might actually have to choose between forest (that *looks* like clean water and food security), and *actual* clean water and food security for humans who don't currently have it. This sucks and I hate it.

this might be a good place to thread in @SarahAMcManus on horror in nature:https://twitter.com/SarahAMcManus/status/1119015801372205062 …

So, horror: not just modern, not just egregores! (And egregores: not just horror! Could write another thread on friendly ones, little household gods, etc.) Probably handy to start off with these posts about seeing the world as a charnel ground: https://vividness.live/2012/08/22/charnel-ground/ …

Big question, about how to talk with kids re: Earth, environment, climate A few components that I'd like to see more of: - Hands-on experiences of exploring ecosystems. Ideally a mix of local, frequently visited (ex: urban creek) + diverse ecosystems (ex: forest, big park)

          - A sense of scale and systems, topic areas prompted by the kid's interest. (Deeply exploring the "why?" & "how?" questions!) What's even *is* a kg or megatonne of CO2? How much CO2 do we exhale every day? How much does a tree absorb? How big of an area is 1000 trees?

Good one: this really hit, capturing something I felt but hadn’t managed to articulate:https://twitter.com/sarahamcmanus/status/1119018230633377792?s=21 …

And also, the value of a signal is dependent on its context. We’re now in a situation where there is no “away.” Reflexive flinching is no longer enough.
