Just read up the NEDERA process. Is this literally just dressed up focusing?
that's what I thought going into the @DougTataryn retreat but it's much more specific! there's a particular direction you're trying to go which is the direction that will cause sobbing, and there's a lot of ways to do Gendlin focusing that won't quite get to sobbing

Yes, this evolved out of my years of using Gendlin's focusing. And through it I discovered what I came to call the nine core feelings and then the interpersonal feelings and emotions precipitated into their places. We have a slightly different focus in BEF.

Got it, that makes sense. I feel that practitioners push the boundaries of things like this in ways that end up being more useful for them (and then for others - like Ann Cornell Weiser). I don't have the opportunity to do a retreat but will keep playing with it.

And the purpose is not sobbing, that is just what often happens when people start to authentically access their emotional system. The purpose is to re-awaken it and getting it working again so it can be integrated with the other aspects of being, making us healthy and whole.

thanks for the clarification doug! i have noticed that i can get interesting results without sobbing (that are different from what i used to get out of focusing) but at least at my level of emotional development i still have a lot of sobbing to do
