I like this when it's by interesting people about nebulous subjects which you can't really convey fully in a book, but mostly they're by boring people about concrete subjects that you could adequately convey in a short essay

I think the problem is that it usually means they don't actually know how to write a book explaining the subject. If nobody else does either that's a sign that the journey to understand it is interesting, otherwise it's a sign the book is mediocre.

Back when I was looking for a literary agent, it was really noticeable how many of them specifically mentioned "memoirs of addiction recovery" as something they didn't want to receive. From this I take that a LOT of people are writing about their personal journeys,
