Couple things follow from this: * you can see why there is so much attention paid to shamatha (in Kagyu preparation for Mahamudra) or shi-né (Nyingma prep for Dzogchen) * I can also see why there is so much deep similarity in the actual instruction (up/down one or two levels

Huh, not seeing how hemispheres relate to the parallels between mahamudra & dzogchen, beyond "both are modeling reality and so is McGilchrist's model"

It's on a practice level. I literally mean, with reference to Tilopa's pith instructions, that he is, in a way, giving directions about how to do mahamudra that *directly gibe with the hemispheres*

gimme one sec and I'll break it down I'm also chatting w/ Venkat Rao about something completely unrelated and its a bit dizzying. Going from epistemic dissensus & the Melian dialogue to meta-vajrayana...I'm going to herniate my left hemisphere

The following is not an endorsement, but you dudes getting very into the hypothetical cross section (to me, because I don’t know McGilcrist) in question might want to look up Reggie Ray’s way of teaching ‘pure awareness’. This* has been his pet project for >10 years.pic.twitter.com/9FagWaPmQN

Ignoring nuance, his pet project has been about trying to present a cross-fertilisation of various Buddhist versions of ‘awareness practice’, with some sort of understanding/language of ‘somatic RH experience’, plus hand waving. Might be interesting if you’re into this stuff

Yeah, I learned a lot from his work. Would not recommend without caveats but despite some big blind spots and flaws he's one of the best meditation teachers in North America. I think a lot of techy, left-brain people would do well to skip Ingram or whatever and read Ray's...pic.twitter.com/btSfSawpbm

sweet, Touching Enlightenment is on my list already, guess i'll bump it up in priority. IIRC the sex coach i worked with in 2017 studied under Reggie Ray for awhile so he's a teensy bit like my grand-teacher 😛

The book's pretty good, but it is kind of overdetermined in how many functions it's doing - like an overloaded chess piece. It's a manifesto, it's an alternative history of Buddhism, it's talking to academic audiences, it's a bit of a meditative practice manual...

Preaching to choir here, but tweeting for the non-choir—I think most people will eventually get stuck with Ray’s stuff, know of at least two people concretely, but it’s excellent and fills a huge gap.

Dharma Ocean audio teaching & podcast is very good also. I find certain passion and dedication in Reg's voice inspiring. This thread is great!
