the moment i see two people respond with the same joke in response to a tweet, that joke is dead to me and so are those people

the whole thing becomes grotesque for a split second. like the people become very clearly puppets of memetic forces beyond their understanding, and whatever is generating the words they type it isn't them

We're all deeply influenced by memetic (& many other) forces beyond our understanding. Here we are, using the same set of 37 alphanumeric (+ space) characters! The same 44 phonemes. Etc. Is there a difference in grotesquerie?

(BTW, I love your observation! Related: I s'times think of Reddit as a kind of efficient market for all possible obvious responses to something. Just scroll down & all the obvious comments will be made somewhere. It's a machine for generating the convex hull of obvious responses.

I like this description! Thinking of reddit as containing all obvious strategies for gaining karma, or for that matter thinking of the internet as containing all obvious strategies for gaining attention.
