All those 80s/90s movies for preteens really did give one that impression
also my life and the life of all the kids i knew 
i didn't meet someone who clearly unambiguously loved their parents until grad school i think

I loved my parents pretty unambiguously, and it led me to feel like I was weird/socially unusual in a way that I should keep to myself.

(It also fed easily into certain religious narratives, about "chosen people" and such, since my religion was very explicitly family-centric)
