Case study: I now think porn is pretty harmful, but I also think telling people "don't watch porn" is 1000% counterproductive. Porn is a coping mechanism and telling people not to use their coping mechanisms sucks, they'll either hate you or hate themselves.

At the very least you need to ask, if porn is a coping mechanism, what is it coping for? That's a much bigger question and gets at a lot of painful and uncomfortable stuff about modern life: alienation, lack of connection, trauma, list goes on.

It is impossible to think about any real problem in isolation. Almost every intractably terrible thing is compensating for another intractably terrible thing (e.g. school is terrible but we need it because parents have to be at their jobs so don't have time for childcare).

It's tough to do, but we need to identify the slopes guiding us into unhealthy equilibriums and adjust the slopes, apply energy to traversing them, search for the ones requiring minimal energy to move into happier equilibriums. Addressing only symptoms can make slopes steeper.
