@Meaningness 's characterization of consensus Buddhist teaching in America as "it's nice to be nice" is so cuttingly accurate. Has been haunting my thoughts lately. We can do so much better than such platitudinous practice. The Buddha's teaching is lightning & thunder. 
When I've wanted to be pathologically nice it turned out to be tied to a bunch of childhood trauma stuff. Processed it with @DougTataryn's work and made a lot of progress. Feels like a critical part of spiritual practice to me, for traumatized moderns
