Not only that but ideological communities spawn nemesis communities (e.g. feminism spawning redpill), and not only is this happening in each of them individually but they're also making each other worse too. What a goddamn mess.

For context, the mention of toxoplasmosis is a reference to
@slatestarcodex's Toxoplasmosis of Rage, which continues to be extremely relevant and worth building on:https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/12/17/the-toxoplasma-of-rage/ …Show this thread -
Also
@Meta_Aesthetic linked me to this piece by@Ideopunk which is a perfect description of the symptoms although could be strongly augmented by a clearer model of trauma:https://quillette.com/2018/12/11/sad-radicals/ …Show this thread

This is a very good inquiry to double click on. I often say that the culture wars need a psychotherapist.

Or a shaman or a priest!

This is... an odd angle. For example, yes, queer people form communities because they can speak of and process their similar trauma together (and not elsewhere). It's a process of connection, as well.
-
Yes, of course. The full dynamics are more than I can fit into a tweet. The genuine connections that do form are the channels by which the subtle trauma reinforcing stuff happens. And... at any given point, it may not be safe to look at this, for any given person.

IFS talks about polarized parts; extreme parts pushing in opposite directions because each part correctly believes that if it's not extreme then the other part's extremeness will lead the person to ruin. (e.g. extreme workaholist vs. extreme slacker parts)
-
It explicitly notes that this generalizes to the interpersonal and intergroup level; a person may develop an extreme part polarized against another's extreme part. In effect two individuals are polarized against each other. Go up a level, and you get polarized groups.

"you are the one making me vulnerable. You are bad and evil and I will attac" "in doing that, you are the one making me vulnerable. You are bad and evil and I will attac" Ad infinitum. The standard way of breaking the loop, killing the enemy, isn't available anymore.
