I wonder if there are any common characteristics shared by all "you-had-to-be-there" stories. Or if it's completely dependent on the skill of the storyteller.
There's some kind of contextuality / illegibility thing. Like a very particular energy in the room because of people's facial expressions or the exact timing of some comedic moment that's hard to verbally describe after the fact.

Or perhaps the storyteller's ability to convey a sequence of emotional changes and get the listener to feel them as intended?
