(i used to be in a math grad program and left partly because of this; main reason i think it's worth talking about is there are lots of really smart people in math and IMO their talents are being almost entirely wasted)

This isn’t convincing to me. Just because we don’t know where the next idea will come from doesn’t mean we have carte blanche to do whatever the hell we want. This isn’t a useful way to address the promise of research. Also not sure QM/GR is a good analogy here.

How would you distinguish between pointless math and useful math before you know very much math at all? Something like: -are you learning it to try to understand something? -are you at least learning it for fun if nothing else? Or do you have other heuristics?
