I've been meandering down the path of viewing people as machines running code for a couple decades. While it has certainly helped me feel like I understand the world, I think this way of thinking does weird stuff to the body, and I'm still unable to really do friendship well.

well, depends on what level of abstraction / consciousness you think of the code; at the level i prefer, "letting the code run" (as opposed to tinkering with it) looks like doing what your body wants / flow, not like e.g. executing a verbal algorithm you got out of a book

The thing that Zak is pushing back against here is really not what I intend to point to with the phrase "mental code." I mean more like e.g. you get angry when people criticize you a certain way, and when you get angry you start arguing against their criticism, etc.
