had an amazing moment recently where i told someone i felt worthless and instead of saying "no, you're worth so much" he said "well. i don't know if you're worthless or not. but even if you are, i can still accept you"

(and note that he explicitly did not claim to know a thing he couldn't possibly know! talked about the way he relates to me instead. in the circling / authentic relating biz they call this "owning your experience," although different groups use that term somewhat differently)

I think "you matter" or "you're not worthless" is an easy statement to make sincerely about humans without much other evidence. Common variants like "you're beautiful" seem much harder to justify, though (compared to e.g. "it doesn't matter whether you're beautiful").

but what is the actual effect of saying it? if my experience is of feeling worthless or w/e, then there's a way in which countering with "you're not worthless" is shoving aside an aspect of my experience rather than being with it. in any case i don't feel any better
