I keep having an experience lately that is something like "wow, history actually happened, to people who really existed, some of whom are alive today." It's striking that I didn't get this experience from history class in school.

in both cases it's a sort of context shock – "reality has a surprising amount of detail". you thought you knew it, but it was really a low-res shadow of it. encountering the detail is what really gets you
hmm for me it's a thing about connecting history to my actual experiences? i think mostly history has felt indistinguishable to me from, like, the backstory of Game of Thrones
