None of us can escape nonconsensual power relationships. We did not and could not have chosen to be born to our parents, who in turn could not have avoided exerting power over us if they wanted to raise us at all. Those of us who have children will be in that position too.https://twitter.com/KatMurti/status/1133425127033638914 …

The dream of being able to make decisions starting from a place of total non-coercion by default is an atomized vision of what it means to be human in relation with other humans, and it does not actually work. See:https://twitter.com/yhazony/status/1130584533391355906 …

Yoram Hazony @yhazonyThis theory was invented by men who did live more or less this way. But anyone who has raised children knows this theory isn’t true. I’m not free to choose my children and they aren’t free to choose me. Very often obligation has little or nothing to do with consent.Show this thread2 replies 2 retweets 10 likesShow this thread -

Thinking that power is the problem, or even power exercised nonconsensually, doesn't work either. It just incentivizes you to lie to yourself (and then others) about the ways in which you have and exert power.

I imagine all of this was obvious to previous generations; that it's not now is a manifestation of trauma that we now have around our families and around power, which can and must be healed if we want to raise children and take on the mantle of power ourselves.

Nice. The Monastic Academy likes to talk about wisdom, love, and power as three things to cultivate and keep in balance so they can be used together.
