The world seems to treat 2 or 3+ layers of "why" as a kind of trolling. The assumption seems to be that the question is rhetorical. People aren't used to us who will happily question things in good faith until we discover the core principles at play.
I constantly wish people would ask why several more times than they do. E.g. tumblr analyzing some man's awful behavior, "oh he must behave like that bc he's afraid of strong women," great, why is he afraid of strong women? Keep going!https://twitter.com/Austen/status/1133361205270028289 …

On tumblr the mechanism seems to be something like ask why until you get an answer that's in line with the narratives of your side and makes the other side look bad. If you keep going past that point it might not be as good narratively, so naturally you don't.

More seriously: lots of very young children do this. Why do we stop? I suspect that many people don't like to think about their reasoning. Lots of things we do don't have good reasons, and it's very uncomfortable to have this pointed out.
